FPGA Image Signal Processor – Modular, Real-Time Image Processing for Embedded Systems

RidgeRun’s FPGA Image Signal Processor (FPGA ISP) is a high-performance, modular solution that brings real-time image enhancement to embedded platforms by offloading key signal processing tasks to a low-power, high-speed FPGA fabric. This solution is ideal for systems where CPU/GPU resources are constrained, but high-quality video preprocessing is required for downstream analytics or display.

Built on RidgeRun’s V4L2 FPGA framework, the ISP modules are exposed as standard V4L2 devices—making them immediately accessible to applications using GStreamer, OpenCV, VLC, and other multimedia tools without requiring custom drivers or APIs.

Key Features:

  • Real-Time Image Processing in Hardware
Offloads critical ISP tasks to FPGA, minimizing CPU/GPU usage and improving performance.

  • Modular Architecture
Mix and match the following hardware-accelerated modules:

    • Debayering

    • Color Space Conversion (BGRA ↔ UVVY)

    • Noise Filtering

    • Auto White Balance

    • Histogram Equalization

  • Standard V4L2 Interface
Each module is presented as a V4L2 device—no custom interface or user-space adaptation required.

  • Built for Embedded Vision Pipelines
Designed to operate as standalone accelerators or part of a complete GStreamer pipeline.

Example Use Case:

An industrial inspection system using a Xilinx UltraScale+ FPGA and NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX captures raw Bayer-format video from a high-resolution camera. Using RidgeRun’s FPGA ISP, the system performs real-time debayering, noise filtering, and color conversion in hardware—offloading the CPU and delivering clean, preprocessed frames to an AI inference engine running on the Jetson. This allows the system to process video at full frame rate with minimal latency.

Customer Reviews

"As a side note: just to let you know, I'm really happy to be working with RidgeRun in general. It's pretty clear that you tell it like you see it, and know what you do and don't know; it's really refreshing. That's super rare on these kinds of technical engagements when everyone seems to either want to claim expertise they don't have, or are so cautious they are don't actually say anything useful"
